Nalbinding for beginners and beyond

Step back in time with nalbinding, a beautiful, ancient textile craft with hundreds of unique stitches and a language all its own. This ancient art uses a fascinating looping technique and short lengths of yarn to produce a fabric which does not unravel.

In this combined class beginners will learn Oslo stitch while more experienced students will explore a variety of interesting stitches.

Beginners: Will learn how to work Oslo stitch, control tension, work in a spiral to start a hat or a tube to make wrist warmers. Samples of the techniques will be supplied along with detailed notes and a full range of videos for future reference.

Intermediate students: will learn a variety of nalbinding stitches including Korgan, Mammen, Dalby, Dalarna, Broden, Caribou and Kaukola.

We will progress in easy stages adding a move or two at a time, allowing you work at your own pace to create a unique buttoned wristlet or cable tie.

A comprehensive set of notes will be provided including links to videos of each stitch for future reference.

Your Teacher

Jill is an enthusiastic practitioner of a range of ancient textile crafts as learnt over many years. Starting out as a knitter in childhood she added spinning and was then captivated by weaving. She loves to weave practical items, especially tea towels and usually has several inkle looms on the go. Now retired on their farm in North East Victoria, Jill and her husband Dave make handcrafted textile tools from local or repurposed timber and cattlebone.
