This workshop takes participants from the hat body to a complete hat. Over the 2 days you will learn how to block and finish a fur felt hat using traditional and modern millinery techniques. You will use wooden blocks to shape a crown and brim of a hat, you will learn how to use a stiffening agent, and wire, to maintain the hats shape for a lifetime of wear, you will learn how to measure your head and size your hat for a perfect fit, you will learn how to trim your hat in a traditional manner, and, if time permits, how to make a lining for your hat. At the end of this class you will have made a beautiful fur felt hat completed to industry standards.
Along the way you will also learn about the different materials, and equipment the professional milliners use, and where to purchase them from, millinery terminology, the parts of a hat, how to make a perfectly fitting hat and some hints on how to make your existing hats fit too, as well as many tips and ideas on different trims. You will learn all about hat styles, along with a little bit of hat history.
This class is a lot of fun and will take you away from your everyday as you explore the world of felt hats.

Marilynne always loved the feel of beautiful materials and the complexity of 3D shapes . These two combined are the definition of Millinery. Six years ago, after a long and successful career in education , she attended her first workshop and made her first hat from lace wired into 3D shapes . Marilynne found the process and production so intriguing and became passionate about learning as much as she could about techniques, materials, styles and construction methods from expert milliners. After completing her Millinery Certificate at the Melbourne Fashion Institute, 2 years as an assistant to a couture milliner and 2 1/2 years working in a boutique hat shop she has set up my own business, operates a Millinery Pop-Up Shop leading into Racing season and teaches workshops , with another creative milliner, to share our passion for Millinery with others.
