We offer engaging sessions tailored for adults, whether you're a beginner or an experienced creator.

Held at the welcoming Farmer Street Studio in North Perth, Western Australia, our classes are designed to fit into your schedule, offering flexibility and accessibility to suit your needs.

We foster an intimate, casual learning environment, ensuring personalized instruction that supports your unique creative journey. Our experienced tutors guide you through an individualised process based on your skill level and artistic interests.

Class information
Whether you're exploring your own creative ideas or prefer guided instruction, these classes provide the ideal setting to immerse yourself in the captivating world of ceramics.

Lauren annd Graham provide an inclusive and welcoming environment where students of all skill levels can grow and express their artistic vision.

We work with paper clay —a versatile, sculpting-friendly clay that can be reworked over months. This allows you to explore and develop your practice at your own pace, with expert guidance, whether you prefer to attend weekly, monthly, or on a flexible schedule.

Our fully equipped studio provides in-house glazing and firing, making the process convenient from start to finish.

Your first session includes a bag of paper clay to get started, any additional clay and firing costs are not included.

Our flexible scheduling system below allows you to choose your preferred starting date and number of sessions.

Once you've booked in your sessions you’re free to attend at your own pace—whether weekly, monthly, or whenever it suits you.

Your first class
In your first class, you'll receive plenty of assistance as we limit the number of new students joining at once.
You'll also meet the friendly ongoing students and welcoming artists in the studio.

We'll discuss and decide on a suitable starting point and technique together.
The class is hands-on, and you'll learn while creating your artwork.
The instruction and assistance will be individually tailored to your experience level and preferences.
With everything broken down into small steps that make it an easy and relaxed process.


Additional Information:
We provide free coffee/tea, clay tools for use, and parking.
Firing cost is shared among work in each kiln load and so may vary, but approximately $12 for a small cup.
Class credits are transferable but generally not refundable, except as required by law.
Senior discounts of 10% are available for weekday daytime classes.

What to bring

  • Bring any drawings, pictures, digital images you might have (optional).

What to wear

An old shirt or comfortable clothes. Covered shoes are necessary as this is a working studio. An old towel to dry your hands.

Graham Hay and Lauren Jane Salt have a combine 30 years experience making and teaching ceramics. 

They are experienced teachers at absolutely beginners, intermediate and expert levels.

They also teach ceramics in schools, tertiary institutions, community centres, potters clubs and private institutions.

They focus on assisting all students to relax, master techniques, gain confidence, socialise with other students, and produce amazing work.

Both are quite but generous by nature, they teach as well as willingly share their own studio discoveries.

Lauren Jane Salt is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in ceramics, organic materials.  Salt co-founded VOLIM with Tia Tokić, a collaborative label that merged art and design through clay, textiles, and florals (2014-2024). Her work  featured in the AGWA and PICA gift shops, has been widely exhibited in Perth, with notable shows at Goolugatup Heathcote and as part of the 2024 Indian Ocean Craft Triennial. 

Graham Hay works primarily in ceramics and inorganic materials. Hay co-founded the Thermal Shock Group (1992-2012), Robertson Park Artists Studio (2000-2022) and Farmer Street Studio (2023-), is in the AGWA and LISWA collections and won the NZ 2024 Forsyth Barr Contemporary Ceramics Award.   Hay regularly leads workshops interstate and overseas and write articles for ceramic journals.

Your Teacher

Lauren Jane Salt is a multidisciplinary artist based in Boorloo (Perth), Western Australia, working primarily in ceramics, organic materials. Her practice delves into themes of cultural myth, identity, and transformation, often using nature-based elements and ceramics to convey narratives of growth and personal history.
Salt co-founded VOLIM with Tia Tokić, a collaborative label that merged art and design through clay, textiles, and florals. Her work has been widely exhibited in Perth, with notable shows at Goolugatup Heathcote and as part of the 2024 Indian Ocean Craft Triennial. In addition to her studio practice, Salt teaches ceramic sculpture and hand-building, sharing her nature-inspired approach and hands-on techniques with students. Website   Instagram


Graham Hay graduated as an art teacher from the Dunedin Teachers College, before graduated from the Edith Cowan and Curtin universities in Perth, specialising in ceramics (1994 and 1995 respectively).  Introduced to paper clay in 1992 by Ceramic Chemist Mike Kusnik, Hay developed unique techniques, which he has shared through 300+ paper clay workshops across 14 countries, including leading the first 3 international paper clay symposiums or conferences (Hungary, Norway, USA) and written over 40 journal articles. He has participated in 174 exhibitions across 16 countries, including 7 biennales. A recipient of 20 grants and awards, his artwork is in public collections in 9 countries, and features in twenty two books. In 2019 he was admitted to the International Academy of Ceramics in 2019, their only member in Western Australia.   Website  Youtube

Cancellations & Refunds

If the organiser cancels the class:

You are entitled to a full refund.

If you can't attend the class:

You may cancel anytime before class starts and claim a full refund.

Terms & Conditions

Class Conditions (not applicable for workshops):

1. Courtesy Saves: If you can't attend a class, your lesson credit is only protected (ie "rolled over") if you email or text me at least a day before the lesson, AND provide a preferred "date of return to class".  

I will confirm receipt of you text or email, and that your place in the class reserved. 

2. You can change which day and time you attend classes, and even attend more than one lesson per week, provided you have first discussed it with me, and there is space in the class.  If you are using the automatic system, you'll see live online were the gaps are and can immediately reschedule.
