Description

LEARN THE ART OF TRADITIONAL JAPANESE SHIBORI DYING

What’s it all about? –

Shibori is the Japanese word for a variety of ways to resist-dye textiles. This Japanese technique dates back to the 8th century. Traditionally, a white cloth (usually silk, hemp, or cotton) was folded, bunched, or twisted, then tied, and finally dipped into a natural indigo dye.  There are countless ways to create the effect. Each one results in a different design, with no two dyed pieces coming out the same.

What will we cover?

Shibori dyeing technique involves folding, twisting or bunching cloth and binding it, then dyeing it. Whatever is used to bind the fabric will resist the dye, resulting in areas of the cloth that take the distinctive blue dye in patterns created by the resistance, and other areas of the cloth that remain white. Shibori is a vast technique and there are tons of ways to do it (and a truly infinite number of patterns you can create), but in this workshop we will try three methods:using wood blocks, dowels, string and rubber bands to bind and resist the dye.

  1. Kumo, translated means "cloud." This pleat and bind technique produces a spider-like ringed pattern
  2. Arashi, translated means "storm." This pole-wrapping technique produces a striated pattern that is reminiscent of stormy rain.
  3. Itajime is a shape-resist technique that produces geometric shapes like triangles and squares.

You will take home your dyed pieces to use in other projects or to just admire. The workshop is suitable for beginners.

Your Guild Experience

This workshop is being run by the Guild of Objects. The Guild is a social enterprise whose mission is to support artists and creatives in their creative journey.

All of our workshops are artist lead and the income that we generate from these workshops goes directly to supporting our creative community. Our workshops are run out of our very cool and conveniently located studio in Hardware Lane, Melbourne.

We understand the importance of connection so our workshops are all limited to 12, that way you get one on one time with your teacher and have time to chat with the other participants. Yes, of course, we serve you a sneaky glass of Prosecco or a cold beer - we cater for all our workshop participants.

So if you’re looking for a relaxed workshop experience in a really lovely location and the chance to meet new people, we welcome you to join us at the Guild.

CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) RESPONSE

The Guild of Objects has put together an action plan to mitigate the risks from coronavirus (Covid-19).

The Guild of Objects acknowledges the health risks of people gathering together but sees events such as workshops are a vital part of our community and can continue to be a place of safety and enjoyment if everyone plays their part.

The objective of the Guild is to support Artists, Makers and Craftspeople and as such our workshops provide financial support for the artists who work with us.

At all our events we will be putting in place additional hygiene measures in order to help minimise the possibility of contamination. This will include hand washing facilities and an increase in the frequency of cleaning of shared spaces.

We have limited the number of participants at each workshop to 12 as this will ensure that we can maintain the recommended social distance between participants.

If you are ill or have been placed into home isolation the Guild will allow you to transfer into a later workshop or if you give us 48 hours’ notice we will provide a refund.

While we have put hygiene measures and increased our efforts to minimise contamination, attendance at our workshops is at your own risk.

We value your continued support in helping keep the Guild going during these difficult times.

Please remember that our online store remains open and will work tirelessly to ensure that there are no delays in dispatching your orders.

We will continue to update and change our policy as more information is known. Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support.
