SS5 - Dyeing for Knitters.
Description
Learn to dye yarn, choose colours and control colour placement for the knitted results you want at the Handweavers and Spinners Guild of Victoria. The class will cover creating the popular style of hand-painted sock yarn in detail and each student will dye their own to take home.
Dive into designing colourways and see how colour theory informs mixing dye colours. Learn how to calculate how much dye to use for a project and discuss the effects of different yarn compositions such as superwash and non-superwash.
Learn best-practice approaches to preparing yarn for dyeing and see how different preparations affect results, as well as how to take dyed skeins through to a format ready for knitting. Discover how to prepare yarn for self-striping patterns and planned pooling.
Create your own skein of hand-painted sock yarn in class with Landscapes dyes. See demonstrations of other dye techniques such as low-immersion dyeing, kettle dyeing, dip-dyeing and using sock blanks.
Learn how to plan a dye project to achieve a particular knitted result and discuss knitting techniques to prevent undesired pooling or create a fade transition between skeins.
