At Simétrie, we are passionate about balancing our desire for fashion and style while helping reduce our impact on the environment and unfair work conditions.
We create timeless leather bags using the most eco-friendly materials available to us, while moving away from fast fashion and towards “slow” fashion. Our bags are handcrafted in Melbourne, by women who are paid a fair working wage for their creative talents.
We believe everyone should experience the feeling of creation, because when we create something ourselves – we feel good and treasure it for longer, if not forever.
Our series of bag-making workshops are based at our studio in Brunswick, Melbourne and hosted by founder Simone Agius. Perfect for beginners with no prior leather experience, and for all creative souls wanting to learn bag-making skills and the craft of leather.
Demonstrated by our experienced team, classes are comprised of 4 hour classes x 3 consecutive Saturdays, or our newly added 2 x full consecutive day course, as this is how long it takes to create one of our beautiful handcrafted bags. Not only does this aim to teach people new creative skills, but new knowledge about the value of the labour that goes into making all of our handcrafted pieces.
You’ll be guided through the production and theory of making our stylish yet functional Crescent Moon Pouch – made by you, for you.
All materials and tools are provided, all you need to bring is good energy, creativity, and a willingness to learn something new. You will also be provided with a take-home information guide so you can continue your love affair for bag-making skills.
Our Eco-friendly Materials:
At Simétrie, we believe in reducing plastic and chemical consumption by using all-natural and eco-friendly materials to minimise our carbon footprint. Our dyes and glues are water-based, meaning they are not harmful to produce or use, nor do they present any dangers to our planet’s soils or waterways.
Our leathers are Australian vegetable tanned kangaroo, which is a natural, low-emission leather that’s been harvested from necessary wildlife management – not farm-bred animals. Kangaroo leather is a strong yet lightweight material, and considered to be one of the most eco-friendliest leathers available.
We don’t claim that our materials are 100 percent perfect for a long-term solution. But we will continue to seek raw materials that are as sustainable as possible for the health of our planet in a bid to meet consumer needs.
Simone Agius, the founder of Simétrie, is passionate about change in the fashion industry, with a focus on sustainability and notably - slow fashion.
A graduate from RMIT, Simone’s love affair with handbags flourished at Melbourne accessories brand Mimco where she was the designer for the small leather goods.
More recently, Simone has been working with local brands such as Crumpler and the vegan leather designer brand Sans Beast. Simone has also delivered bag making courses as part of RMIT’s Bachelor of Fashion Design.

Simétrie is about the love of leather goods while practicing balance in the fashion business. We balance creativity, innovation and functionality while keeping environmental and social sustainability at the forefront of our minds.
The impact that fast fashion is having on our planet and our people is huge. It is well documented that the fashion manufacturing process is putting an unprecedented amount of pressure on our planet’s natural resources and human resources in a bid to fuel the ever-growing desire to consume fashion products.
To combat this, we use good design to balance aesthetics and ethics, resulting in high-quality, innovative, clever goods using the most ecological materials available to us. We create goods that you will love from season to season; goods that are timeless.
In addition to our retail structure, creative workshops are offered to the general public; run on-site in our leather maker space. Classes vary from beginner to experienced levels; shorter classes for those wanting to try something new through a tailored learning experience, and longer courses for those who are more serious about learning the craft of leather bag making and fine-tuning their practice.
