What you will learn
- This hands-on, beginners workshop will cover basic oyster mushroom growing. It is a skill sharing 'tips and tricks' lesson from an experienced commercial mushroom grower. After the mushroom cultivation class you will walk across to the kitchen onsite to learn how to prepare your home grown fungal delicacies to perfection and then sit down at the table with the class to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
What you will get
- You will learn how to make your own grow at home kit to take home and then cook your mushrooms to perfection including the perfect lions mane steak and wild garlic & mushroom risotto. After lunch students will have a chance to purchase fresh mushrooms and other SCM products like our walnut & mushroom pate, OMG Confit and OM XO Sauce.

What to wear
Casual dress for the weather on the day. You will be outside but undercover for the mushroom growing class and in the kitchen for the cooking class.
Appropriate for
Everyone with a passion & curiosity for fungi upwards of 10 years old. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Sporadical City Mushrooms is a small urban farm in Melbourne where we grow delicious seasonal mushrooms for our local community, markets & restaurants. Guided by our zero waste ethic we have grown from a small backyard business to building our farm at Alphington. We also teach mushroom growing workshops for indoor, garden or mushroom log cultivation and give farm tours to share our DIY methods and help get more people growing. Your Teacher
Your will learn how to grow the perfect oyster mushrooms from Sporadical City Mushrooms founder & seasoned farmer Julia. Julia has many years of experience both as a farmer and working to support the farming community in Australia and worldwide. She is an experienced educator having taught at informal workshops, international conferences and has delivered programs in urban agriculture and food system studies at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Julia enjoys supporting others in growing their own food by sharing her skills and experience and understanding of healthy foods ecologies. In 2018 she established Sporadical City Mushrooms in the small rental on Swanston St in downtown Melbourne, moving to upscale her business in Alphington in 2020 where she continues to produce seasonal gourmet mushrooms for restaurants, households, and farmers markets.
Your guide to fungal culinary perfection is gourmet chef Carlo Cilli. Carlo is a professional chef with over 20 years of experience in London and Melbourne. Hailing from Abruzzo, Italy, his love for slow food began in his childhood. Carlo has traveled extensively across Europe and South America, drawing inspiration from diverse culinary traditions. After six years at the acclaimed Melbourne restaurant Tipo00, he is now shifting his focus to sustainability in cooking. Passionate about foraging, mushroom cultivation, fermentation, and beekeeping, Carlo combines his global experiences with a commitment to environmental responsibility, creating innovative dishes that reflect both tradition and sustainable practices.

If the organiser cancels the class:
You are entitled to a full refund.
If you can't attend the class:
- A refund can be requested 5 days before class starts. Free of charge.
- A transfer can be requested 2 days before the class starts. Free of charge.
- A credit note can be requested 2 days before the class starts. Free of charge.
No changes will be allowed after these times.
Terms & Conditions
Anyone partaking in any classes or coming to any events at Sporadical City Mushrooms or organised by Sporadical City Mushrooms must agree to these terms and conditions.

I (the participants) agree to take on full responsibility for any damages, injuries and for physical and/or personal property, which I might incur whilst participating in classes and/or events organised by Sporadical City Mushrooms
2.) PHOTO & VIDEO
Unless I, (the participant) advise Sporadical City Mushrooms to the contrary I agree to give Sporadical City Mushrooms unrestricted publishing rights for any photographs or videos taken at Sporadical City Mushrooms classes and events or on Sporadical City Mushrooms premises.
