Immerse yourself in the magic of Botanical Dyeing! The art of Natural Dyeing is the perfect antidote for our busy lives and after this class you will see the plant life around you in a completely new and exciting way.
Natural dyeing can be divided into 3 parts: foraging and collecting, preparing materials and dye baths and creating beautiful new colour. This final process can take days or weeks to achieve which is part of the magic of natural dyeing. It helps us all take time to enjoy the process and slow down the often busy pace of our lives.
In this workshop, you will learn how to extract colour from plants, prepare fibres and materials for dyeing and how to create long-lasting colour from natural dyes. The workshop will include the three components of the dyeing process:
First, we will ‘forage’ through pre collected plants from the wild, our gardens and the kitchen;
Second, we will prepare our dye material from a combination of untreated and pre-treated/mordanted (which sets and sometimes alters dye colour) wool, silk and linen.
Finally, we will brew up our dye pots from at least three plants and learn how the different fibres react with the natural dyes.
As our colours slowly develop in the pot, we will try our hand at the beautiful art of ‘Hapo Zome’ (from the Japanese words for “leaf dye”) which is a fabulous way to directly apply plant dye colour from leaves, flowers and petals onto paper or cloth, by hammering them in and producing an array of colour and pattern.
All materials are provided. A generous grazing table and drinks are included. Students will take home samples for natural dyed fibres, their own solar dye in a jar and printed class notes.
About the tutor - Jacquie Lazzarotto @jac.weave
"As a creative person, I’ve always sought happiness in making and colour, from fine art, to interior design, patchworking, weaving and now natural dyeing, the processes of creating colour, pattern, layers and textures are what has always fuelled my passion for art – at home and in my workplace. The art of natural dyeing, however, also feeds my soul and connects me to nature and my life in the most fulfilling way. Not only does it allow me to forage, collect and hoard, but it gives me space to slow down the pace of life and create the most beautiful and unexpected colours from nature to reuse in my textile and fibre art."
