We invite you to this full day workshop to learn how to eco-print, dye fabrics and stain fibres using ONLY natural materials. We will wander, collect and learn about a variety of local Australian native seasonal plants.
By the end of the day you will be equipped with knowledge about how to prepare and mordant your fibres, plus the basic techniques of extracting colour from plants to make beautiful pieces of cloth.
Not only that - there will be a special focus on the ecology - you'll learn about the superb native flora, their names and properties and get to explore the local area with a knowledgable guide. This ecosystem in the dandenong ranges is highly unique and is world renown and studied. It is an ancient Gondwaanan relic and you will see how it connects to the great Central Highlands Mountain Ash forests of Victoria. We will also explain the risks the area faces. We've packed so much value into this course and hope to impart many insights so that your foraged materials will create a lasting impression which you can knowledgeably share and bring the beauty of nature with you wherever you wear your piece :) It is a glorious ancient tradition and we can make modern pieces of wearable art directly from nature!
9am - Meet and greet at the Two floors Studio Belgrave Please enter the underneath of the building via Blacksmith Way. We will then prepare our fabric for the day and learn about all the different options for Mordants - the chemical process that makes the technique colour-fast.
10 - 11.30 We will venture into Sherbrooke Forest and take an beautiful walk through the gorgeous natural area to collect, forage and learn about the wondrous forest and all it’s unique ecology, which we will be gathering and creating our pieces from.
11.30 - 12 Tea/Coffee break: tea and biscuits provided! Please feel free to also check out our wonderful local Belgrave coffee houses.
12 - 1.30 Bundling our fabric. We will do a group piece of silk and any garment you have brought. Let the alchemical boiling commence!
1.30 - 2.30 Lunch. We have a Microwave if you would like to bring your own but we can recommend loads of good food places around!
2-30- 4.00 After lunch it would be fabulous to talk more in depth about the forest and connecting with the landscape. This will include an information session about the Eco-dyeing process and our beautiful Mountain Ash forest with Question and Answer time.
4.00 - 5.00 At the end of the day you will take home your project to dry, settle and unbundle as eco dying is best left for a week . All will be explained during the course. We will then have the chance a week later to share in a private online forum our results and future projects.

Little Red Toolangi Treehouse :
A grassroots community group who instigated the longest tree-sit on the mainland of Australia in 2013 - 2014 in Toolangi State Forest.
The act of raising the Treehouse supported locals in their quest to protect the forest from being made into paper. As we carefully positioned our Treehouse in a non-active coupe, it allowed for a family friendly and highly inclusive space to engage and learn about the one of the most studied and threatened forests in the world.
We have built an ongoing legacy of environmental education and have acted as a beacon for native forest protection since, drawing people from the city to have a genuine forest experience, both educational and inspirational.
- The process eco printing

- At Sinoper Textiles we don't only have a love for natural fibres but a massive emphasis on upcycling and rejuvenating the old into the modern and stylish . - We would love it if everyone brought one garment/piece of fabric with them to transform. Best clothes to bring are a singlet top or long sleeve top / t - shirt; leggings with as much cotton content as possible; wool, silk or linen piece (these could be purchased from the op shop or brought from home). We welcome trying most things, they will just have different results (which is half the fun, but can sometimes can be disappointing). Please choose items which are light in colour.
- If you have any old nuts and bolts, chains or small pieces of rusty things, or small copper pipes, please bring these along on the day to use in your garment.
- Lunch if you don't want to buy some locally.
Natural dyes can stain clothing and footwear, so be sure to wear something dark or old!
Open to everyone interested!
