About the Kora:  The Kora is a stringed instrument used extensively in West Africa. A Kora typically has 21 strings, combining features of the lute and harp.

The playing style resembles the finger picking of a blues guitar, and the placement of the strings allows for the playing of chords and harmonies along with fast melodic runs.

About our teacher: Appiah Annan is a rare talent originating from Ghana, West Africa. His diverse artistic skills span many forms of dance, including traditional African, contemporary, freestyle, hip hop and acrobatics, along with his impressive musicianship as a master Kora & Djembe player.

Appiah maintains a strong connection to community and devotes a lot of his time to working within a range of sectors, including performing and operating workshops for youth, the elderly and disadvantaged. Having studied Community Cultural Development at the Victorian College of the Arts, he aims to use the arts to encourage respect, togetherness and understanding among all members of our diverse society.

African Drumming

(15 Reviews)

We believe in uniting cultures through the power of music.

We are dedicated to sharing the music and culture of West Africa in all that we do: through instrument making, workshops, study tours, and performances.

We are the largest African music store in Australia and we love our drums! We are committed to giving back to our planet and ensuring our ventures are eco-friendly and sustainable, including the management of two Tree planting initiatives across Ghana and Indonesia.

With an international network of drummers and dancers, our team includes performers and drum makers from around West Africa including Mali, Senegal, Guinea and Ghana, and homegrown Aussie talent too.

The rhythm journey is a beautiful and often profound paradox, its depth knows no bounds. It has been our goal to take the drum to as many corners of the world as possible. Once it’s there, the vibration of the rhythm goes to work and magic happens.
