Description

You will be taken on a journey combining the French language and Art History. It is a wonderful opportunity for you to practice your French in a different context and broaden your vocabulary.

You will learn about great painters and their works of art. Sylvie will guide you with a methodology to help you read the artwork in terms of lines, colours, and perspective. At the end of the classes, you will have a better understanding and knowledge of the painters and their works, and will be able to discuss them in French. All classes are conducted in French.

Here are our Term 3 classes:

Frida Kahlo – She was born on July 6, 1907, in Coyocoán, Mexico City, Mexico. Considered one of Mexico’s greatest artists, Frida Kahlo began painting mostly self-portrait after she was severely injured in a bus accident. Kahlo later became politically active and married fellow communist artist Diego Rivera in 1929. She exhibited her paintings in Paris and Mexico before her death in 1954 and is still admired as a feminist icon.

Renaissance in Florence – Discover Florence’s people and culture during the Renaissance through the magnificent works of art by Giotto, Masaccio, Fra Angelico, Piero della Francesca and Domenico Ghirlandaio. You will acquire the artistic vocabulary to describe vivid pictorial scenes as well as the artistic style and technique.

French Impressionists –Their work is recognized today for its modernity, embodied in its rejection of established styles, its incorporation of new technology and ideas, and its depiction of modern life. You will have the opportunity to comment on this unique style that barely conveys form, uses pure unblended colours, and emphasises the effects of light.

Van Gogh and Gaugin – settle down in Arles, South of France in the company of Van Gogh and Gaugin who shared the “yellow house”. We will go over their expressive and symbolic art work and talk about their vibrant but destructive relationship.

Dali and Surrealism – Through the fantastic paintings of Salvador Dali, enter the world of Sigmund Freud and the French surrealists to understand the world of those who sought to establish the “greater reality” of man’s subconscious over his reason. You will have an opportunity to comment on the iconography of his works and to discuss their hidden meaning.
