SCA Barista Skills Professional (3 Days) $1,900
Description
This course is designed to test advanced skills and detailed knowledge of the processes used and expected from a professional Barista (e.g. from someone working as a Barista for 12 months or more, with some management responsibilities).
Successful candidates will have a detailed understanding of the techniques available to maximise the quality and consistency of espresso when using sophisticated espresso machines with specialty coffee.
Note: SCA Barista Skills Intermediate certification is a prerequisite for this course
Sensory Skills Foundation, and Intermediate Brewing are recommended prerequisites.
You will learn:
- How to use a sophisticated tasting methodology, and descriptive language when analysing espresso.
- The effects of altitude and processing on coffee.
- How espresso blends are constructed.
- How to analyse the benefits of various distribution tools and differences in tamping pressure.
- How different brewing methodologies (e.g. HX v Multi boiler; temperature, pressure profiling etc.) affect extraction.
- How water temperature affects flow rate, average extraction yield, and taste & flavour balance.
- How brewing ratios affect average extraction yield, and taste & flavour balance.
- How to masterfully extract espresso - Adjusting recipes to suit the equipment and coffee you are using.
- The components of milk and its production process.
- The skills to pour consistently excellent latte art.
- How water chemistry affects extraction and the sensory attributes of coffee.
- How to evaluate the effectiveness and suitability of various water filtration systems.
- How to manage basic business finances (profit & loss), and minimise wastage.
Barista Attitude Storm FRC, La Marzocco Linea, and Wega Urban espresso machines, along with Mazzer (ZM, Major, and Kony) and Mahlkonig (K30) grinders, are used in this course.
Students who successfully complete the practical exam during the course must then successfully complete an online exam after the course to receive the internationally recognised SCA Barista Skills Professional certification. SCA Barista Skills Professional certification earns credit towards the SCA Cafe Diploma.

Pre-requisites: Holding the SCA Intermediate Barista Certification for a minimum of 3 months is a mandatory requirement. SCA Introduction to Coffee, Barista Foundation, and Intermediate Brewing are recommended (but not mandatory).

You are entitled to a full refund.
If you can't attend the class:
You’re welcome to send someone in your place.

- A refund can be requested 14 days before class starts. An admin fee of AU$20.00 applies.
- A transfer can be requested anytime before the class starts. Free of charge.
No changes will be allowed after these times.
