Description

This is a practical hands-on weaving workshop for weavers who:

· Have the ability to wind a warp, to dress your own loom, and to weave tabby.

· Have the ability to understand a draft and warping plan.

· Have a basic understanding of double weave.


What you will learn:

· How to weave up to 4 separate layers of cloth on an 8-shaft loom, using multiple shuttles.

· How to weave multiple intersecting layers on an 8-shaft loom.

· How to weave offset layers on an 8-shaft loom.

What to bring

  • · Student to supply own yarn, preferably something smooth and not textured, in 4 to 8 different colours. It is advisable to use something smooth like a mercerised or un-mercerised 8/2 cotton yarn. The warp is 176 ends wide and approx. 1.5 long including typical loom waste of approx. 50cm for table looms. This will be sufficient for some exploration after completing workshop sample.
  • · A minimum of 4 shuttles for weaving. Stick shuttles should not be more than 18-20cm/7-8in long.
  • · Notebook, scissors, tape measure, ruler, and calculator.

Preliminary work

Students must have their looms dressed for weaving prior to the class starting, according to instructions emailed by the tutor in December.


The Guild's aim is to bring together those who practise handweaving, spinning and allied crafts and to help and encourage them to increase their knowledge, understanding and skills by discussion, demonstration, exhibition, teaching and the provision of quality resource materials.

Our Guild rooms house an excellent library and craft supply, sell members work and host a wonderful range of interest groups, classes and workshops.

Your Teacher

Amanda Ho is a highly experienced weaving instructor.  She teaches the Guild's Certificate of Weaving program.

She is a highly accomplished weaver in her own right.  She has exhibited in a number of exhibitions where only work of the highest quality is short-listed for display.
