SS9 - Batts, Blends, Rolags and Rovings
Description
Using Blending boards to prepare fibres to create a variety of different results.
Blending boards are a great tool to use up bits of fibre left from other projects, they’re also a great tool to use for creating repeatable striped yarns.
Get the most out of your Blending Board by varying the types of fibres you use and the way they are placed on the board. Learn how to remove the fibres from the blending boards using various methods so they can be spun and plied in different ways.
There are endless combinations of yarns you can make just by varying the techniques you use to apply the fibre to the Blending Board and utilising different methods of spinning and plying.
What you will learn
- • create gradient batts and self-striping rolags.
- • create your own continuous roving’s using a diz on the blending board
- • Create a preparation using mixed fibres such as wool locks, silk, cotton and flax

- • how to maintain your tools.
- • How a Blending board differs from hand carders and drum carders.
What to bring
- • Spinning wheel in working order with spare bobbins (at least 3)-
- • Your own Blending Board
- • A set of hand carders and a diz if you have them.

Casual clothes
Appropriate for
A knowledge of spinning and plying yarn on a spinning wheel. We will be making small samples of each technique during the class
Additional items required
A $30 mixed fibre pack will be available in craft supplyAn additional selection of washed fibres from your stash to add to your blends.
The Guild's aim is to bring together those who practise handweaving, spinning and allied crafts and to help and encourage them to increase their knowledge, understanding and skills by discussion, demonstration, exhibition, teaching and the provision of quality resource materials.
Our Guild rooms house an excellent library and craft supply, sell members work and host a wonderful range of interest groups, classes and workshops.

Jane Fitchett has been spinning for around 12 years and have always had an interest and love for the textile crafts since she was very young. she loves all aspects of spinning, particularly spinning for embroidery and playing with colour.
