A message from Sarah
I have a strong passion for ethical manufacturing practices and sustainable products that are not driven by trends, that last beyond the fashion seasons and cycles. I believe design is a means to enhance womens’ lives, their wardrobe and their style. And hence, SARAH CONNERS the label.
I’ve always been drawn to fashion and style. I’m fascinated by the link between personal style and self-expression. My career in accessories started as a Milliner, working as the Melbourne Theatre Company Milliner for several seasons, as well as in the fashion sector. My Millinery journey took me to London, where again I blended fashion and theatre and worked with the Royal Milliners.
Creating leather bags was a somewhat gradual process for me- I loved working with leather and exploring the techniques used in making bags. I didn’t want to just be a designer of bags; I also wanted to make things, literally with my own two hands. I almost haunted Melbourne’s last two bag workshops to learn the craft of centuries which, sadly, felt like a dying art. I successfully applied for a grant to travel to Italy to visit some of the world’s most prestigious leather bag manufacturers, and learnt from the best of the best leather artisans practicing their craft. One thing that stood out to me in the Italian approach was that of deliberation, of consideration, not dissimilar to Italy’s slow food movement. Pieces created by the artisans are considered essentials to their recipients’ wardrobes and lifestyles for years; the antithesis of fast fashion.
I love working with women who are seeking out a statement piece that has been crafted by hand in my Hawthorn studio. I offer women an opportunity to create a customised solution to create their perfect bag, tailored to their personal style. Every SARAH CONNERS piece is unique and undiscovered, perhaps slightly quirky, and always stylish.
I launched Sarah Conners with a clear vision:
to create beautiful, practical and simple pieces for remarkable women that reflect their personal style, and to bring everyday luxury to their wardrobes and their lives.
SARAH CONNERS is an Australian-made brand, accredited through Ethical Clothing Australia. All pieces are ethically made in Hawthorn Victoria and are available in store or online.
