Contemporary Collage - TEEN Retreat

T(W)EEN CLASSES (for ages 12-18yrs) - TERM 1

1.5hr contemporary collage classes

Over 20 people have attended this class

Description

How nice would it be to invest in a bit of freedom to make time for yourself every week to be uniquely YOU?

Want to come play with collage every week, maybe work on a masterpiece, project, gift or concept (for example, a calendar) over a span of time? Or just a quick piece of art with a unique and extensive range of resources at your very whim with like-minded curious & adventurous minds?

Come dabble every week in what some artists may call the dark arts of contemporary art, i.e. collage. Why? Because have you ever been told NOT to cut up books? Exactly! In these weekly classes, you’ll be ENCOURAGED to do just that! But instead of destroying things, you’ll get to create a whole new world of your own – almost like a dream, but on paper.

Mozy into this dream-like studio by yourself and/or with your tribe, bestie(s), family/friends or loved ones and surprise yourself with the always-unexpected result of the most unique piece(s) of art straight from your imagination!

Every week, you’ll be presented with a fresh eclectic collection of a specially curated selection of paper paraphernalia (vintage children’s books, encyclopaedias, National Geographics, calendars from olde, etc). Ideally, but not compulsory, you would’ve done one of my 3-HOUR WORKSHOPS before so you can just dive right in. However, if you haven’t and you’re brand new to this, I will lead you through a step-by step-approach. The more you gain confidence, the more techniques you’ll learn and, with that, comes more freedom. Nevertheless, I’ll always be there to gently guide you from whichever level you’re at, without being invasive.

Just imagine, EVERY week, indulging in the incomparable thrill of cutting into what you’ve always been told wasn’t allowed. You’ll get to cut out ONLY the parts that resonate with YOU, that matter and stand out to YOU. The result will be something UNIQUELY YOU.

Groups are kept small (max 7) so it’s not overwhelming, and French music will be playing in the background. You’ll be sitting in the dreamiest, light-filled studio on the planet, situated next to a stunning pool with water fountains. It’s a healing and SUPER CHILL sort of place – one that makes people leave with a smile.

Gift yourself or a loved one(s) this golden opportunity to indulge in the hands-on therapeutic discipline of contemporary collage.

Hi, my name is Rochelle Van Der Merwe

As multi-disciplinary artist, I find exploring ideas through storytelling with imagery & words

via contemporary collage

a very effective way of connection

&

creating a sense of

BELONGING.

Collage allows us to deconstruct & reconstruct the world how we see it.

It gives you an opportunity to

create a new universe

irrespective of how

small

or

large

it

is.

I am especially drawn to how contemporary collage gives new life &meaning

to pre-used books and imagery

so they no longer lie alone in the corner and gather dust.

We already have so much in this world,

so collage offers

an opportunity

to

waste less

rebuild.

My studio,

named STORYHOLDING

is located at the pool in

MONTSALVAT, Australia's oldest continuously active artists' community

In fact,

it's my MOST FAVOURITE room

in

the

whole, wide world.

Read all about it HERE!

My work has been featured in both SOLO & group exhibitions

As an immigrant from South Africa & as a trauma survivor,
I am passionate about using art-making

as a way to thread our connection back to
our authentic selves
&
true expression
.

What drives me, is to share & learn

which is why teaching has always

drawn me like a magnet.

This was the most beautiful art class. My 11 year old daughter loved going every week. She learned so much from Rochelle who is the most patient, caring and loving teacher. She showed my daughter many different techniques and always encouraged her to try new designs. I would highly recommend this class for any child who shows an interest in collage art.

Rochelle took us all on a magical carpet ride in this workshop. She created a safe and warm environment to experiment this wonderful medium. We were given lots of creative freedom which was interspersed with expert tips on cutting techniques, different layouts and backgrounds, colour theories and thematic concepts. I went into this class not knowing what to expect, but knowing that it would be amazing because Rochelle is a natural and inspiring artistic mentor. Prepare to be transported to an enchanting world in which time becomes irrelevant and anything is possible!
