About the Speakers

Nathan Sampimon, Founder @ Inspire9

Nathan Sampimon is an investor, entrepreneur, startup advisor and has been involved with many of Australia’s fastest growing startups.

Nathan’s first company was formed in 2006, a high-tech consultancy who have developed innovative solutions for PwC, Rio Tinto, Bain, LaunchVic, as well as many of Melbourne’s technology startups. With an engineering and computer science background, Nathan became involved in the early-stage startup technology companies coming out of Melbourne around 2007. Through this exposure, he saw the path for investing in early-stage technology companies and put together Melbourne’s first startup accelerator AngelCube. After raising 2 successful investment rounds, the accelerator invested in 32 companies during the 5-year fund lifecycle from 2010 to 2015. Today the companies in the portfolio are worth over $100M, and include some of Melbourne’s most successful early-stage startup companies including wireless lightbulb company LIFX, bitcoin platform Coinjar, book publishing platform Tablo and retail gamification platform Workplace Arcade.

Nathan also founded Inspire9 coworking network in 2009, making it the first community-driven coworking space in Melbourne. The community workspaces have doubled in size every 18 months and is amongst the largest in Australia.

Today Nathan is an angel investor and startup advisor to companies in Australia and the US. He actively works to create a bridge from Melbourne across to Silicon Valley and give Australian entrepreneurs the edge to become successful in global markets.

Inspire9

Wade Institute

Wade Institute is home to The University of Melbourne’s Master of Entrepreneurship. When you’re teaching people to create, make and innovate, the space they occupy should invite them to create new things from the moment they walk in. The Wade Institute centre will do just that.

Rather than walk into a building full of classrooms and offices, students will enter a space with a kit of parts, from walls and screens to different desk parts and lights. This main studio workshop is a white canvas with colourful parts ready to become whatever students and staff need it to be – from open plan classroom to office, customer lab or forum to pitch their business idea.

It was one afternoon when one of the Founders, Kym Huynh, called Angie Chong of The Humble Dumpling, just to have a conversation. It had been an intense start to 2017 and just shy of 3 months, Kym wanted to connect again with what brought him inspiration, joy and fulfilment - the people and companies that he works with.

For him that day, inspiration came in the form of Angie Chong. By some wonderful stroke of serendipity, Angie shared an inspiring excerpt from the book “The Last Chinese Chef” by Liang Wei. For Kym, the words were both beautiful and moving, and created a fundamental and tectonic shift. These words would later lay the foundation for the launch of the WeTeachMe Pop-Up School.

“Apprentices have asked me, what is the most exalted peak of cuisine? Is it the freshest ingredients, the most complex flavors? Is it the rustic, or the rare? It is none of these. The peak is neither eating nor cooking, but the giving and sharing of food. Great food should never be taken alone. What pleasure can a man take in fine cuisine unless he invites cherished friends, counts the days until the banquet, and composes an anticipatory poem for his letter of invitation?”

Angie Chong invites people into her own home to share food, so that she can pass on her heritage and knowledge. It is not only the act of sharing that is magical, but also the pleasure one can take when the bequeathed knowledge is used to leave a positive and lasting impact on cherished friends, family, and maybe - if it happens enough - our communities, and one day, the world.

And so the classes, workshops and courses, where we invite the best and most influential people in the world to present at, act as a conduit to pass on knowledge and heritage to a willing and mindfully curious audience. It’s an invitation that brings together people who believe in the the idea of sparking an eagerness to learn, so that together, we can propel a tidal wave of transformation that impacts not only on our own lives, but the lives of those who surround us, and then our communities.

Hence, each booking page is more than just a place where you can register your interest. It is an anticipatory poem in the guise of an invitation. When you claim your ticket, it’s an anticipation that the learning experience is set, the classroom is ready, and that the experience will be great. Good talk and at times insightful but on multiple occasions it did stray from the topic on community. Hosts could have help bring it back with their questions. To really make use of the time (especially being a Friday evening), I would have liked to see another speaker round the subject up and talk about all important online community.
