SS8 - Alpaca Rugs
Description
Students will spend the first day learning to spin a chunky, heavily textured yarn out of clean alpaca fibre. They can continue to spin more fibre at home during the week and will be shown how to wash/set the yarn in preparation for the second class in the following week. The second day of tuition will require any two (or more) shaft loom where students will learn various weft-faced techniques for weaving with the yarn they previously made.
What you will learn
- Students will be shown how to core-spin a chunky, textured yarn suitable for mats, rugs, perhaps cushion covers using fibre of often uneven length. They will learn how to create a stable and balanced yarn. Students will also learn various techniques to start and finish the woven item, how to achieve a number of colour-change effects using either bound weave or clasp-weft techniques. We will discuss pros and cons and misconceptions of alpaca fibre and how best to deal with it.
What you will get
- I will provide each student with sufficient clean, multicoloured alpaca fleece and core yarn for a small mat, say 12 x 24 inches. Cleaning the fibre is quite time consuming so I am yet to decide on an appropriate materials cost.
What to bring
- Day one will require a spinning wheel with a large orifice and a small plastic bowl/tub to hold the ball of core yarn in place at the base of the wheel and stop it from rolling around.
- Day two, one week later, will require a portable loom as stated above. It could be a rigid heddle loom but multiple shafts will give students more options with designs. Strong warping thread such as tapestry thread, scissors, two or more stick shuttles, and a tapestry needle.
- Material Fee $35.00
What to wear
Casual clothes
