SS14 - Pooled Warp on a Rigid Heddle Loom
Description
Do you have a skein of beautiful hand-dyed yarn that you’re not sure how best to use? Pooled warping is a great way to show off a special yarn, or to imitate the look of a painted or hand-dyed warp. This workshop is suitable for beginners and above, using rigid heddle looms.
You will learn to warp a rigid heddle loom and adjust your project to work with the repeat pattern in a hand-dyed skein of yarn. We will cover how to estimate the size & shape of a project that you can get from your skein of yarn and how to make design decisions. You will then warp & weave a unique piece of cloth! Your finished item is flexible depending on the yarn you have but could be a scarf, table runner, cushion cover etc. Something to show off your lovely yarn!

What to bring
- Warp: 1 or 2 skeins of variegated yarn, dyed in the skein (in a repeating pattern, not a gradient or space-dyed), 50-100g. From 4ply to 8ply, depending on the reed you have available - see notes for equipment below.
- Weft: Co-ordinating yarn in a solid or semi-solid colour - pick one colour from your warp yarn, or choose a neutral grey, white or black. Weft should be slightly thinner than your warp - e.g. if warp is 8ply then use 5ply for weft.
- Equipment: Rigid heddle loom, warping peg, clamps, heddle hook, warp sticks/cardboard and a shuttle. Reed/heddle will depend on your warp yarn. 8ply yarn = 7.5 - 10dpi reed. 5ply yarn = 10 - 12dpi reed. 4ply yarn = 12dpi reed.
