Description

4 Week Complete Throwing Basics

Ready to immerse yourself in the incredible world of wheel thrown pottery? Our 4 Week Complete Throwing Basics course will take you from an enthusiastic beginner to a certified pottery addict! Learn every stage of taking raw clay from wet lump to finished, functional piece of high-fired ceramics!

During the four 2.5 hour classes our experienced teacher will guide you through each step of creating beautiful handmade pottery on the wheel. Participants can expect to create 6-12 pieces from scratch. Staff will bisque fire students’ work between weeks 3 and 4, and complete a final glaze firing within 4 weeks of the course end, at which point we contact you to collect your food safe, dishwasher safe, oven & microwave safe items!

Clay, tools, firing, and dipping glazes are all included in this class, meaning you can come in with no knowledge of clay before starting.

We limit this class to 6 people to ensure everyone has the necessary support of the teacher to best learn the techniques. The courses sell out quickly, so book early to avoid disappointment.

Please note: this is a class designed for adults, and we do not allow bookings for children under the age of 16.

What you will learn:

Week One

  • How to wedge and prepare your clay
  • How to centre your clay on the wheel
  • How to form cylinders
  • How to create simple bowl forms

Week Two

  • Continuing to practice throwing techniques

Week Three

  • Trimming pots ready for bisque firing
  • How to add a foot ring to the base of pots

Week Four

  • Waxing and glaze preparation
  • Basic glazing and decorating techniques, using the provided dipping glazes

What to bring:

All you need is a towel! All clay and tools are provided.Although clay washes out easily, we recommend wearing clothes you don’t mind getting messy in! Shoes are also required at all times in the studio for safety reasons.

Parking Info

Please drive right past the house to the long white shed.  Park in front of the shed.

Classes often book out, so book early to avoid disappointment. We have never had a 4 Week Course cancelled due to low enrollment, but if the unlikely should occur, we will directly contact students to discuss possible rescheduling.

Our studio is a place where there are very little rules except to respect your fellow artists, their work and the studio, to relax and learn that there is no end to the possibilities when working with clay..........

At SaJo Ceramics you can...

Join a casual pottery class or social pottery & ceramics session; take a workshop to have a go at the pottery wheel, take one of our 6 week courses to learn the basics of throwing, or just use our  Melbourne studio facilities on a casual basis. Discover beautiful stoneware handmade tiles for a unique splashback or outdoor wall feature or make your own! Explore a huge catalogue of ceramic pieces to paint in both acrylic paints and fired finishes, made to order from vintage and modern bisque designs. Buy hand made tile blanks for your school or community project, ready for you to paint, carve or decorate, or just drop in and chat with fellow artists while enjoying a cuppa.

Great introductory course for me covering off the basics of pottery and not having done pottery before I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere of the class, the attentive and constructive feedback from the friendly and approachable instructors and learning about trimming and glazing. Definitely hope to return to classes with SaJo Ceramics in the near future to perfect my throwing, centering, trimming and glazing. Thanks Eddie, Amy and Jo.
