Autumn has arrived! The light is golden, the leaves are falling, and we are beyond excited to invite you to pause, observe, and reflect on the season’s transformation through a botanical watercolour study with a master painter, Judith Van Heeren.
Dutch-born Australian artist Judith Van Heeren has spent the past three decades exploring her deep fascination with the natural world through the medium of paint. She has exhibited widely and taught extensively, sharing her skills, insights, and love for the craft. Describing herself as a "curious mix of artist-cum-scientist," Judith has always been drawn to watercolour for its fluidity, delicacy, and ability to capture the fleeting beauty of nature in intricate detail.
Watercolour is the perfect medium to express the transient and ephemeral nature of autumn flora. In this immersive one-day masterclass, you will select your perfect autumn leaf and embark on a guided study with Judith. She will introduce you to the fundamentals of watercolour painting, with a focus on colour theory and mixing using a limited palette. Through hands-on demonstrations, you’ll explore essential techniques such as wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry, gaining confidence in your approach to this luminous medium.
With Judith’s expertise, patience, and encouragement, you'll build a deeper relationship with watercolour—learning to embrace its spontaneity and subtlety—while setting yourself on a path to working with greater autonomy in your artistic practice.
What You'll Learn
- Observational Drawing: Begin with sketching in pencil to capture the essence of your subject.
- Colour Mixing: Learn to mix colours through transparent layering, using a limited palette to achieve subtle hues.
- Brush Techniques: Explore the endless possibilities of different brushes and their applications.
- Watercolour Techniques: Master the wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques to create beautiful, detailed studies.
Hands-On Practice
- In the second half of the day, you'll combine the various techniques learned to work on a detailed study of a leaf. This exercise will help you gain confidence in capturing the subtle colours and intricate details of the natural world.
Suitable For
- This workshop is perfect for beginners as well as those with some experience in watercolour painting. With a class size limited to 10 students, you'll receive one-on-one tuition, ensuring you can progress at your own pace.

Judith Van Heeren is a professional artist who has been translating images from the natural world for the past 30 years. She exhibits in private and public galleries, and her work is held in many public and private collections nationally and internationally. Judith has been finalist in prizes including the Geelong contemporary art prize and Waterhouse natural history art prize.

You’re welcome to send someone in your place.

CB Studios cannot offer any ‘make-up’ classes, courses or workshops missed.
Absences without notification will forfeit the full class/course fee and receive no credit. By proceeding with your booking you agree to our terms & conditions, and refund policy.
Should CB Studios be forced to cancel a class due to low enrolments, you will be notified as soon as possible prior to the scheduled class and will receive a refund, transfer or a credit voucher for a replacement class, course or workshop.
Collection of work and materials left at the studio: Please understand that our storage capacity is extremely limited. Work and painting kits will only be retained for one month after which they will be disposed of.
Anyone partaking in any classes or coming to any events at Chapman & Bailey or organised by Chapman & Bailey must agree to these terms and conditions

I agree to take on full responsibility for any damages, injuries and for physical and/or personal property, which I might incur whilst participating in classes and/or events organised by Chapman & Bailey
2.) PHOTO & VIDEO
I agree to give Chapman & Bailey unrestricted publishing rights for any photographs or videos taken at Chapman & Bailey classes and events or on Chapman & Bailey premises. (For use of Chapman & Bailey marketing materials).
