Have you ever wanted to grow learn how to grow your own fish to eat and produce delicious water efficient vegetables at the same time? Aquaponics is one the most water efficient forms of agriculture known. This workshop will provide a broad overview of both the theory and practice of designing productive backyard style aquaponics systems which you can create in your own garden at home as well as a tour and technical overview of the various aquaponics research projects at CERES. The course covers: fish and plant species selection, fish feeding, plant nutrient requirements, basic water quality testing and the history of aquaponics and its relevance today in regards to water scarcity and food localisation.

Robert Kershaw has been practicing aquaponics for over six years and his garden has won the Darebin Awards for Sustainability. His lifelong interest in aquariums and keeping exotic fish led him to exploring aquaponics. He built his first aquaponics system from scratch using recycled bathtubs, and then invested in a purpose-built setup. The success of his integrated garden and aquaponics systems - and his down-to-earth practical approach - have attracted great interest from those eager to give it a go, to active aquaponics practitioners who want to share ideas in this new and evolving space.Robbie and his garden were featured in Jamie Durie’s book Edible Garden Design where he and his family were described as “the very model of environmental awareness”. His efforts have also been reported on radio (3AW, 774 ABC) and sustainability magazines (Sanctuary and Good Organic Gardner) and newspapers (The Age, Sydney Morning Herald). The Age article described fresh fish poo as his secret weapon to success. Robert has also worked as a board member of the charity Cultivating Community for over 7 years.
