Description

So, you’ve decided you’d like to learn how to sew?  And you’ve a new sewing machine? But don’t know where to start?

** NOW INCLUDES ALL MATERIALS PROVIDED!

Bring along your machine and we will show you how to thread it, practise stitching and make a project just for you. Once armed with the confidence to use your machine, this course will give you the oomph to work on lots of projects. (I can hire a sewing machine for you if you don't have one! please see here )

As this is an absolute beginner lesson, we will take it slow and begin with sewing simple piece, a Tote Bag.

Firstly, we take around 1.5hours to learn how your machine works, thread it and practice stitching. We then take these new skills to begin making up a project, a super useful Tote Bag. The skills learnt here can include making seams, zig zag edging and top stitching.

Skill level: Complete beginner - bring your machine in the box!

What you will learn:

  • What all those knobs do
  • How to change your needle
  • How to thread both the bobbin and the machine
  • Sew basic straight stitches to the seam allowance and zig zag the edges
  • Trouble shoot basic machine problems

What is included:

  • Fabric to practice your sewing
  • 1m of fabric for your tote bag & a spool of thread - you can choose on the day.
  • 5 hours of expert tuition with only 3-6 students in the class
  • Sewing Pattern with instructions to take home
  • A fun and engaging atmosphere
  • Copious cups of tea and coffee

What you need to bring

  • Your clean machine along with all it's power cords and the foot pedal -- If you need to hire a machine, you can add this to your cart - please see here
  • The machines accessories, especially all the feet, and throw in the instruction manual while you are at it just in case.
  • Your fabric scissors and sewing kit - if you don't have one, you can buy one here and have it waiting for you in the class.

  • Your lunch - there is a fridge and microwave available.

  • Saturday 8 Feb - 10am to 3pm with Caz

I've done a few arts and craft related classes in my time but this was probably the best I've ever done in terms of inclusions, pace, knowledge shared and fun ! I particularly enjoyed the small community feel of the class and the beautiful work space which had everything we needed in case we didn't have something as a beginner learner. Big shout out to Kelna who was a legend at explaining the ins and outs of everyone's machines, showing us clear explanations and providing lots of 1 on 1 (technical and emotional) support when needed. She also provided a bunch of practical tips that you'd only get in-person from an expert, that simply can't be replicated by watching a YouTube video tutorial. It was really satisfying to walk away with a finished tote bag. The workshop has ignited a desire to continue in my sewing journey and I hope to pay another visit to Useful Sewing Box again soon! ❤️❤️❤️

This was my first ever sewing class and I loved it! Kelda our teacher was fantastic, so knowledgeable and patient. I’m excited to finally be learning to sew and I think Usefulbox is a great place to do so. The best part in my opinion is that you can bring your own machine to learn on. I plan on returning for more classes.
