This fun and supportive workshop, provides women with easy-to-learn physical and non-physical techniques for self-protection. In just two hours, you will learn 5-6 physical self-defence strategies, taught by our amazing female instructor who is a Jiu Jitsu World Champion and all round babe. These exercises are done with a partner so bring a friend or make a new one! You will also learn several non-physical techniques such as verbal assertiveness and other avoidance strategies. The class begins with an energetic warm up and finishes with a gentle cool down where discussion and reflection is welcome and encouraged.
Whilst we are serious about equipping women with life-long skills for self-protection, we do this in a fun, non-threatening and inclusive environment, we play funky music, laugh lots and always look out for one another.
Unlike many other self-defence courses, our workshops focus on empowerment and increasing women’s sense of safety in the world rather than decreasing it. We are passionate about ensuring this workshop will leave you feeling strong, safe and positive, and will give you a lasting sense of solidarity and connection to the ‘Louder Than Words’ sisterhood.

Louder Than Words was created by a young Melbourne law student, Matilda Simpson. Matilda began the business out of what she felt was a necessity to do something, to make herself and every other Melbourne woman feel safer in the community.
Matilda is passionate about achieving this through empowered self defence training, which academic studies have found to be, so far, the most effective and relatively simple way to reduce rates of female violence.
The workshops themselves are distinct from most existing self defence training courses as they are all female run, and focus on increasing women’s sense of safety in the world rather than decreasing it. The physical and non-physical strategies taught in the workshop are easy-to-learn and easy to remember.
Matilda and the rest of the team make sure the workshops are a fun, inclusive and supportive environment where women are made to feel comfortable and given regular opportunities to take a break from the content. Every workshop finishes with a gentle cool down and stretch, where discussion and feedback is welcome and encouraged, and every participant is invited to stay in touch with the ‘Louder Than Words’ network and become part of this supportive female community.
