Stress and anxiety are experienced by everybody at one time or another; but when not handled properly, depression can become evident. The dissimilarity between them is that stress is a response to an intimidating situation. Anxiety is a subsequent consequence to the stress, which leads to depression if not handled timely.

In any given situation, may it be good or bad, many may say that stress intervenes with their lives at least in a tolerable degree. Stress, if constantly recurring, may have direct repercussion to your health and may eventually cause headaches, high blood pressure, chest pain to heart palpitations, skin rashes, and loss of sleep. So, what are the best and most effective ways to handle these negativities?

We asked a group of professionals in this field to put together pieces of advice and methods in dealing with these emotional problems. This workshop will provide better understanding of what maybe you, your family or friend is undergoing and become a support system to help them cope with these emotions.

About the Speaker

Jackie @ Humming Puppy

Beginning my career in the hospitality industry, I eventually fell into the dental industry working my way up to managing practices for almost 10 years. During this time I was fortunate to work alongside people who were passionate about their jobs, for me though, teeth just weren’t my passion!! However; being surrounded by people who love what they do on a daily basis inspired me to find my passion and purpose in life.

Yoga had been calling me for years but it wasn’t until 2008 that I came to the practise regularly in a search to regain strength and flexibility after I poorly managed a knee reconstruction. I became absorbed, practicing twice a week with my teacher and developing a daily home practise. I was initially unaware of the huge impact yoga was having on me holistically, combined with weekly Ayurveda treatments I began to notice subtle shifts in my energy, my behavior and my attitude towards life. I made more than a few life changes and began creating and living a life I wanted to live with integrity, trust and belief in myself.

My love for yoga was obvious and many had suggested I undergo my teacher training but I ignored the suggestion for some time. However in 2013 it became clear to me that yoga was my calling, so I decided to become a yoga teacher and undertake my teacher training, with the view to leave my job in dentistry and open my own yoga studio.

Then, in 2014 over a cheesy Valentines Day dinner with Chris (my partner in both life and business) Humming Puppy was conceived. Less than 12 months later we opened the doors to our first studio in Prahran, Melbourne on the 2nd February 2105, followed by the opening of our second studio in Redfern, Sydney in April 2016. Currently we are working on opening our third studio in New York at the end of 2017.

Our studio’s are an expression of our creativity and a desire to make yoga accessible and appealing to people who would never have considered practicing before. It excites me to be able to share more of Humming Puppy with the world in the years to come. The teachings of yoga are the greatest gift I’ve been given and to be able to share these gifts with our students who inspire me on a daily basis is an honor!

Kunal @Eugene

Kunal is the founder and CEO of Eugene, a product that helps people make smart health choices through affordable and guided genetic screenings. He was previously the founder and CEO at OutTrippin (a travel planning startup) and Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Angelcube (Melbourne’s first startup accelerator) and Inspire9 (Melbourne’s original community-led cowering space)

He is an experienced entrepreneur and product designer focused on building products that bring simplicity and accessibility to a confusing genetics+healthcare space. Kunal has a keen interest in companies that pursue global markets, having operated extensively in the Australian, US, Latin American and Asian markets.

Kunal started Eugene to promote equal access to genetic testing and to improve ethnic and racial representation in genomic and healthcare research. He firmly believes that if new genomic technologies aren’t more inclusive to diverse populations, we will worsen existing health disparities and create new ones. And he probably won't shut up about it either, since he can be insufferable like that

City of Melbourne

The development of Melbourne as a knowledge city has long been a priority. Today, the knowledge city concept remains a central component to the vision of the city. The City of Melbourne seeks to create a future in which the knowledge sector is better branded, understood, valued and experienced.

“The City of Melbourne continues to develop new ways to gather and share information to support those whose innovations and developments underpin the growth of the city. We broaden understanding and respect for Melbourne’s diverse knowledge sector and ensure learning can be a lifelong process.”

Inspire9 is the original community-led co-working space for Melbourne’s startups, freelancers, and creative entrepreneurs. It is a community in the truest sense. We share ideas, responsibilities and opportunities. We collaborate on projects, help our neighbours with a tricky technical problem and broker business deals over a game of pool or ping-pong. At the end of the week, we savour the satisfaction of work well done over a cheese plate and glass of something nice at our friendly Friday Night Drinks.

Dream Factory

The Dream Factory has created a space for extraordinary people to gather and innovate in design, technology and social change. It is owned and powered by Impact Investment Group and has become one of Melbourne’s premier workplaces and event locations. The building features an ample on-site and secure car parking, very accessible bike paths from Melbourne CBD and inner north, great end-of-trip facilities, and loads of breakout spaces, meeting rooms and communal areas. The rooftop is one of Melbourne’s best panoramas of the city and port and is accessible to all its tenants.

SPARK Deakin

SPARK empowers, educates and brings together Melbourne's most aspiring entrepreneurs. An initiative by Deakin University, our mission is simple: To invite everyone, Teach the curious, and Empower the best.

SPARK is more than just a moment in time, a source of funding, an event, or even a community. Spark is an startup ecosystem designed to help solve real problems and create a better future.

Startup Victoria

Startup Victoria is a not-for-profit organisation set up to create More Founders and Better Founders.

Startup Victoria is the go-to destination for all startup related topics. We believe that Melbourne can be one of the world’s best cities to build a startup. We want to help make that a reality by helping to accelerate the growth of Victoria’s startup ecosystem.

Wade Institute

Wade Institute is home to The University of Melbourne’s Master of Entrepreneurship. When you’re teaching people to create, make and innovate, the space they occupy should invite them to create new things from the moment they walk in. The Wade Institute centre will do just that.

Rather than walk into a building full of classrooms and offices, students will enter a space with a kit of parts, from walls and screens to different desk parts and lights. This main studio workshop is a white canvas with colourful parts ready to become whatever students and staff need it to be – from open plan classroom to office, customer lab or forum to pitch their business idea.

Vendor sincce 2012

It was one afternoon when one of the Founders, Kym Huynh, called Angie Chong of The Humble Dumpling, just to have a conversation. It had been an intense start to 2017 and just shy of 3 months, Kym wanted to connect again with what brought him inspiration, joy and fulfilment - the people and companies that he works with.

For him that day, inspiration came in the form of Angie Chong. By some wonderful stroke of serendipity, Angie shared an inspiring excerpt from the book “The Last Chinese Chef” by Liang Wei. For Kym, the words were both beautiful and moving, and created a fundamental and tectonic shift. These words would later lay the foundation for the launch of the WeTeachMe Pop-Up School.

“Apprentices have asked me, what is the most exalted peak of cuisine? Is it the freshest ingredients, the most complex flavors? Is it the rustic, or the rare? It is none of these. The peak is neither eating nor cooking, but the giving and sharing of food. Great food should never be taken alone. What pleasure can a man take in fine cuisine unless he invites cherished friends, counts the days until the banquet, and composes an anticipatory poem for his letter of invitation?”

Angie Chong invites people into her own home to share food, so that she can pass on her heritage and knowledge. It is not only the act of sharing that is magical, but also the pleasure one can take when the bequeathed knowledge is used to leave a positive and lasting impact on cherished friends, family, and maybe - if it happens enough - our communities, and one day, the world.

And so the classes, workshops and courses, where we invite the best and most influential people in the world to present at, act as a conduit to pass on knowledge and heritage to a willing and mindfully curious audience. It’s an invitation that brings together people who believe in the the idea of sparking an eagerness to learn, so that together, we can propel a tidal wave of transformation that impacts not only on our own lives, but the lives of those who surround us, and then our communities.

Hence, each booking page is more than just a place where you can register your interest. It is an anticipatory poem in the guise of an invitation. When you claim your ticket, it’s an anticipation that the learning experience is set, the classroom is ready, and that the experience will be great. And best of all, that you’re going to be sitting next to people who are just as eager about learning and curious about life as you are.

It is a surprising thing. A surprising feeling. And it appeals to the human need to learn, to share, and to experience.
