Description

Calligraphy is the art of beautiful writing. For centuries, it has been written with a quill dipped into ink, and not much has changed. The same tools that were used then to write historical scrolls are now used to create a mix of traditional (Copperplate, Spencerian, Italian Hand, etc ) and chic modern calligraphy.  This class is structured around learning the basic traditional letterforms before tweaking them to create a modern take on calligraphy.

Throughout this 3 hour introductory hands-on course, you will be personally assisted with any questions you may have as Joanna shares her tips and lessons learnt from her own calligraphy journey.  You will be walked through the basics, an introduction to the materials and tools, learning how to load the nib with inks, how much ink to load, how to hold a pen and proper posture and of course, learning how to write the actual letters.

Perfect for both the beginner and hobbyist, learn traditional pointed pen calligraphy with a modern twist! With lots of hands on practice, you’ll find that calligraphy is not only beautiful to look at, it is also very therapeutic, an addictive!

No prior experience needed.

This workshop was suitable for me as someone with absolutely no experience in calligraphy. This meant learning about the very basics - but I was very pleased to be able to get started 'hands on' very quickly. Jo was an enthusiastic and helpful teacher and guide, with very specific directions and feedback for us. She had pre-prepared booklets for our use with examples and guides for our work, as well as a handy resource list. Best of all though, we were able to keep our nibs, holders and ink, so we could keep going at home while considering further supplies to obtain. It's all too easy to neglect new skills without materials at hand! I much appreciated being able to just 'show up' and leave with everything I need to continue at home. Thank you Jo for getting me started with this beautiful art.

The space was good (thank goodness for the industrial-size heaters though). The class was very interesting, although it could have been paced just a little better, we really needed another half an hour to get through the content comfortably. However this was Joanna's first time doing a class at the Workshop so hopefully this will be better in the future. I'd recommend the class to others.

A fabulous workshop, Jo is very accomplished and a very competent teacher. Even though it was a large class she was able to interact with everyone and covered everything we needed to know as beginners. The kit was generous and all we needed.
