Description

Bespoke Brushes & Handmade Books

This workshop is brought to you in partnership between Nichola Prested of Handmaker's Factory and Thea Bates of Art In An Hour

Making marks is what art is all about, whether it’s with a paint brush, a pencil, charcoal or perhaps even a stick. It is also about creating your own unique mark makers, or Bespoke Brushes

Bespoke Brushes, as the 17th Century term suggests, are brushes custom made by you, in this workshop, either from recycled materials, treasures from the natural environment or both! There will be ample materials available including driftwood, twigs, seeds, grasses, recycled textiles, strings and fabric remnants to name a few. There will also be a variety of papers, however you may choose to bring your own.

Spend the morning exploring textures, touch, how they grab the paint or the ink. Make one brush, make many. For us Bespoke Brushes can also be works of art in their own right. You may never want to get paint near them! Learn how to under-paint, to layer, to trail, to draw, to over-layer. Find joy in negative space. Find immense satisfaction in patterning. Try big broad brush strokes, and tiny trickley lines using your breathe.

Think ahead to the afternoon workshop where we will turn our works into handmade books using a variety of techniques. Choose from concertina, hand stitched, folded and more! How beautiful those marks can look on paper, or fabric or maybe even on another natural product such as paperbark.

Be inspired by nature, be sustainably responsible, be both at the same time.  Share with others the experience of making your own ‘mark maker’ and take home artwork you will love.
