with Maria Montes
In this 3 hour workshop you will be introduced to Copperplate Calligraphy. Copperplate is a style of calligraphic writing, which uses a sharp pointed nib in a pen-holder instead of the flat nib pen.
Focusing our attention on the lowercase alphabet, you will learn the difference between calligraphy, lettering and typography, as well as the guidelines, historical context and examples of applied works.
You will spend the main part of the class getting some serious practise in of this style, before progressing to making your finished piece. You’ll acquire some serious skills and finish off by creating your very own piece of calligraphy art!
Maria Montes is a Melbourne based designer who has been practising the art of calligraphy since 1996. After a long break working as a full time Graphic Designer, she went back to study calligraphy, typography and type design in Barcelona and New York City.
All her lettering projects start with her own calligraphy as a base. Writing letters teaches Maria how to look at letterforms and understand its rhythm and contrast.
Maria’s work is generally intricate: typography and colour play an important role in her design approach. Check our Maria’s website for examples of her work, and an extensive biography about her professional trajectory in the about section.
This class went from the very basics! Maria was amazing with simple advice to get you to produce profoundly improved calligraphy by the end of the night! What a miracle worker!
Fun and useful
We learned how to use the Copperplate Calligraphy Pen to write the lower case alphabet. This is the second class I've had with Maria and I love her teaching style. I look forward to more classes with her.
