January means a fresh a start, and yes it means that we’re also smack in the middle of the warmer months - so staying inside just isn’t an option when heaps are on offer over the summer time. Amid rising temperatures are a whole lot of cool new classes and events to take part in, so get ready to drag yourself out of the couch because here are the highlights of the best things to do and learn in Melbourne during the summertime.

Anyone who’s made pottery even just once can attest that it is an especially cathartic experience. In this 6 or 8-week, Saturdays-only course, you will learn all the foundational skills in vessel making, then take home at the end of the term all the projects created during class.

Sweet Garden Posy Class
Create the most gorgeous arrangements of stunning seasonal blooms to make a sweet garden posy. You will be taught all the techniques and be provided with the materials you’ll need, so there’s no need to come in with anything at all, not even experience. After class, your beautiful creation is yours to take home.

Learn about 3 Ravens’ approach to producing different styles of IPA (Indian Pale Ale). This 2-hour class covers: a brewery tour of 3 Ravens Brewery, a sharing style sit-down feast with the brewery team, and a guided beer tasting through the 3 Ravens and Hop Nation’s range of IPAs, as well as variations of IPA from locations New World, American, Australian, New England and more.

Take the outdoors indoors with this beautiful hanging moss accent called a Kokedama (which literally means moss ball in Japanese). In this workshop, you’ll learn the steps of making one, and also learn different tips on how to design and care for it after. You’ll also have fun challenges throughout, and then and finish at a coffee shop for a chat and having a look at what you have captured throughout the day.

Preserving Know-How: Savoury Ways with Tomatoes
Enjoy your summer harvest of ripe tomatoes for longer by learning super quick and easy ways of turning them into sauces and preserves. In this workshop, you will learn all kinds of preserving techniques, such as bottling, dehydrating, as well as some traditional Italian techniques with tomatoes. You get to taste and take home all of the preserves you made, as well as enjoy a delicious morning tea from the My Green Garden kitchen.
