Description
Craft your own indigo-dyed shibori leather pouch.
Day 1 - Shibori Leather Dyeing
Dive into the intricate world of Shibori, a centuries-old Japanese art form, to decorate a piece of leather that will form the basis of your pouch.
Under Rachel's expert guidance, you will learn binding, folding, and clamping techniques. Students will be provided with some leather pieces to practice dyeing and a larger piece to prepare for use in the pouch workshop. Notes on the methods taught in the class will also be supplied so you can continue practising at home.
Additional activities (for a fee)
- You can purchase additional pieces of leather to dye for your use at a later date.
- Spin some flax to make linen thread for stitching your pouch, and dye it today.
- Bring some items you want to dye in the indigo dye pot.
Note: Synthetic indigo is used.
Day 2 - Craft Your Leather Pouch
Prepare for a creative adventure as you craft your very own leather drawstring pouch for small items. The leather pieces dyed at the Explore Shibori Mastery workshop will set the stage for this exciting session, where you will learn the fundamentals of leathercraft, including saddle stitch, finishing edges, stamping designs, and setting grommets.
There will be a $55.00 materials fee on the day to cover the cost of the leather and supplies.
Entry to parking is from the shared driveway with Brush Farm Corrective Services Academy. Drive to the rear of the house and park in the bays.

- All materials will be supplied.
What to wear
Casual clothing preferably dark as you may get a splash of the indigo dye .
The Guild brings together people who practise the arts of hand weaving, spinning and associated crafts and fosters and encourages the crafts by instruction, discussion and exhibition.

Membership rates are for one calendar year starting 1 January and ending 31 December. New members joining from 1 October receive the balance of the current year for free when purchasing next year’s membership.

Your Teacher
Rachel Dengate is a creative force with a 30-year career spanning various artistic disciplines, including leatherwork, upholstery, signwriting, painting, furniture restoration and fabric dyeing.
Rooted in Darug country, she is a prominent figure known for her unique leather art brand. Rachel's active involvement in artistic communities, such as the NSW Leather Guild, Aussie Leathercrafters, and various workshops, markets, and events, highlights her commitment to sharing her creativity.
Her latest venture involves the art of Shibori dyeing with leather, where she crafts one-of-a-kind pieces using this traditional art form.

Materials
Most courses have requirement lists and a materials fee payable to your tutor in class.
Location of Workshops
Most workshops will be held at the Hand Weavers and Spinners Guild at Brush Farm House, 19 Lawson St, Eastwood. There is parking behind the house. Public transport is by bus accessed from Eastwood or Parramatta stations.
Times
Participants should arrive 30 minutes prior to class commencing. The venue must be cleaned up within 30 minutes of class finishing.
Discounts on Workshops
Network Groups: For each course, one member may pay at the member’s rate on confirmation of their financial status by their group and its approval.
Knitters Guild NSW: We have a reciprocal arrangement with the Knitters Guild whereby their members may enroll at members’ prices and vice versa.
