Sheep Heart Corrosion Casting - Melbourne

Sheep Heart Corrosion Casting - Melbourne

2 Day - Beginner Workshop

Rest in Pieces invites you to attend an introductory, two-day, hands-on workshop where

you will learn the scientific process of corrosion casting.

Scientist, Gavin Burland, will share some of his extensive knowledge gained over more than

15 years working with plastination techniques, museum preparation techniques, anatomical

embalming and dissection.

Gavin is currently the Manager of Technical Operations at the Sydney School of Veterinary

Science (University of Sydney) and President of the Australasian Institute of Anatomical

Sciences (www.aias.net.au)

The workshop will run from 12:00pm - 8:00pm on Saturday and 11:00am - 6:00pm on

You don’t need to have any previous corrosion casting experience to take part in this

workshop. Gavin will teach you basic sheep pluck anatomy while guiding you through the

correct process of preparing, injecting, macerating and installing your specimen.

Throughout day one, you will learn how to identify the anatomy, prepare the specimen and

inject the heart with resin. Gavin will end the day with an informative seminar on the history

of corrosion casting and the process of chemical maceration.

On day two, you will clean and prepare your own pre-macerated specimen, ready for

mounting. You will end the day by learning the basics of installation.

At the end of the weekend, you will walk away with a deeper knowledge of this fascinating

scientific process and your very own gorgeous corrosion cast heart in a glass dome.

Everything will be supplied including your sheep pluck, tools and materials, an apron, dinner

(Sat), light lunch (Sun) and a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages so that you

can sit back, relax and enjoy the weekend. (Note, alcoholic beverages are only available for

students 18+)

Feeling inspired and want to continue working on your new corrosion casting skills once you

get home?

When you register for the workshop you can book a ticket with one of two options;

Your partial take home kit contains:

Much like Neo awoke from the motherboard in The Matrix and proclaimed, "I know kung fu", I feel now that, thanks to the wonderful folk at Rest In Pieces, "I know how to make a resin casting of a sheep's heart." I took the Sheep Heart Corrosion Casting course last weekend, and the experience couldn't have been more lovely. Over the course of two days, I and eight other students were guided step by step through the process of finding the arteries of a heart, mixing resin, injecting said resin into the heart, macerating the heart in a lye solution, cleaning the final resinated specimen, and mounting it in a beautiful glass domed display. I'm looking at it right now, hovering over my record collection, and it looks simply divine. Instructor Gavin, his wonderful assistant Mel, and owner/operator Nat really outdid themselves with this experience. Camaraderie, great conversation, a kick-arse playlist in the background, and nonstop-flowing of tasty bubbly beverages rounded everything out. I loved, loved, loved every moment of it, and I can't wait to return for another of their courses. Will it be Insect Preservation, Wet Preservation, Taxidermy or Articulation? I have no idea. But I will be back, that's for certain. Thanks, RIP!

Fantastic hands on workshop. In two days you learn about preparing your specimen for casting and how to clean and prepare it for presentation. The instructor Gavin was amazing and explained the process so it was achievable for everyone.
