Traditional Alool Bamboo & Yarn Wall Hanging Class

Learn the art of Somalian weaving

Description

Muhubo Suleiman is an inspiring Somali weaver and has a passion for preserving her cultural heritage through crafts making and hand weaving techniques.

Originally from a small town near Galkayo in Somalia, Suleiman learnt these weaving techniques from her mother at age five. She currently hosts Traditional Weaving workshops all across Melbourne and has most recently exhibited as part of 'fashion Now/ Melbourne Now showcase with the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV).

"My name is Muhubo Suleiman, I am from a small country town near Galkayo. I am arrived in Australia in 2003 in hope I could continue my passion of craft making. As a single mother of three I had to push aside my dreams and raise my three kids. As my youngest is now 12, I now have the time and opportunity to pursue my dreams in craft making. I specialise in handmade traditional rugs, bags and wall decorations. This allows me to showcase my traditional Somali craft to a wider audience while at the some time preserving my cultural heritage."

My friend and I had a great time at the Alool Bamboo and yarn wall hanging making class. It was a nice small class size (10 students I think). I loved learning and had a great laugh. Our teacher was great and I loved hearing about how she grew up and their traditions. The cafe out the back was great too. I would definitely do another class there.. already looking forward to it. xx
